Reduced Pressure Zone Assemblies

What Is an RPZ, and Why Does It Need Testing?

An RPZ, or Reduced Pressure Zone assembly, is the highest level of backflow protection and is required on high-hazard cross-connections, where a backflow event could pull contaminants into the potable water supply. Because they protect against a health hazard, RPZ assemblies must be tested and certified at least once a year, and only a TCEQ-licensed Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester may perform the test.

This page covers RPZ assemblies specifically. For all device types and the wider rules, see our commercial backflow testing page.

RPZ Testing FAQ

How often does an RPZ need to be tested?
At least once a year. RPZ assemblies protect against a health hazard, so they require annual testing and certification, plus a test any time the assembly is installed, repaired, or relocated.
Who can test an RPZ valve in Texas?
Only a tester holding a current TCEQ Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) license. A property manager or general maintenance tech cannot legally certify an RPZ test.
What is the difference between an RPZ and a double-check assembly?
An RPZ provides the highest protection and is used on high-hazard connections, and it has a relief valve that discharges if the assembly fails. A double-check assembly is used on lower, non-health-hazard applications. The required device depends on the hazard level of the connection.
My RPZ is discharging water. Is that a problem?
Occasional relief discharge can be normal, but continuous or heavy discharge usually means the assembly needs a rebuild. It is doing its job by dumping rather than letting contaminated water back into the supply, but it should be tested and repaired promptly. Call (817) 803-8690 and we will get it sorted.
Do you file the RPZ report with the city?
Yes. In Fort Worth, test results are submitted through the city's reporting system, and we handle that filing for you along with copies for your records.
